Chocolate “Ice Cream” Shake (Dairy-Free)

Chocolate Shake

This is one of my favorite chocolate indulgences…

Chocolate Shake

Over the years I have come up with many different variations of this treat and still it continues to satisfy my chocolate desires. What I love the most: When I find myself craving something I don’t want to be eating – typically some kind of shake or frozen yogurt from a fast food joint – I remind myself I have frozen bananas in the freezer at home and can have one of these as soon as I get home, if I still want one.

Chocolate “Ice Cream” Shake

Place everything, except for the macadamia nuts [affiliate link] into your blender, I use my Magic Bullet (this is my Amazon affiliate link). Blend until completely mixed. If using the Magic Bullet [affiliate link] you may need to remove it from the motor base and shake the cup a few times to mix everything up. Add the macadamia nuts after thoroughly blended. I love the mouth feel of nuts in ice cream. This is a delicious substitute for ice cream, I would never miss ice cream ever again as long as I could have this.

Let me know if you get a chance to try it. 🙂  When you click on this image, my Amazon affiliate link will take you to Amazon to check out these gorgeous soda fountain glasses.

It’s a shake, but you have it in a bowl? 😉 Either way it sounds terrific, Starlene! Will try it once my life settles down. 🙂

Off to share on FB … hugs,

@Shirley @ gfe, ha! I couldn’t get a very good photo of it in my Magic Bullet! The photo kept coming out super blurry and or overwhite so I finally opted for the bowl. 🙂 I do usually eat it with a spoon using the Magic Bullet blender cup. 🙂 Sooooo yummy! UPDATE: 1-9-12 Finally made the shake again, this time photographed using an appropriate vessel for a “shake”.

I was feeling like something other than my usual kefir snack yesterday when I saw your recipe. You inspired me! I didn’t follow your recipe exactly, but I used 1/2 frozen banana, 1 cup milk kefir, a few ice cubes of coconut cream, a spoonful of peanut butter, some vanilla extract, a few drops of stevia, and a spoonful of cocoa powder. It was AMAZING! It tasted a little bit like a peanut butter cup. Thanks so much for the idea!

Congratulations! This recipe succeeded in achieving the nearly-impossible: causing our 8-yo GAPSster to be so full that he couldn’t finish. 🙂 I made it with an unfrozen, room-temperature banana, and also left out the ice cubes. The resulting mixture was therefore on the runny side, but oh-so-delicious. Thanks, Starlene! This recipe is a keeper!

@Martha, awesome! I am thinking about making this for a treat on Christmas Day and will take a new photo, in a milkshake type glass. 🙂

We’ve been making all sorts of version of this one for years (I made the first attempt in 1999… long before GAPS!). The key is the frozen, sliced banana – you can do almost anything with it.

The most simple version (that still tastes and feels like icecream): Put the frozen bananas in the mixer – and mix. You have to stop a few times to scrape it from the insides of the bowl to keep mixing. But it will turn out like smooth, thick icecream, and it tastes quite different from a banana like you know it.

The way we make it most often these days is with egg yolks and omega oils, a dash of honey and some vanilla powder. When we want a shake we add water. Love it. And thanks for spreading the word Starlene!

Hi Lynn D., thanks for sharing that with us. You could also just leave out the egg. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
